Founded in 2009 by Stephen Tong, Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra (JSO) was established to fill the demand for classical concerts in the greater Jakarta Metropolitan area. As the orchestra-in-residence at Aula Simfonia Jakarta (ASJ), it is the first and only professional orchestra that performs monthly, JSO presents an estimated 15-20 concerts each year, showcasing a diverse repertoire that spans from the Baroque era to the 21st century.
JSO’s curated concerts are built on four pillars: the Masterworks Classical Series, the Choral Oratorio Series—performed in collaboration with Jakarta Oratorio Society as the choir-in-residence at ASJ, the Educational Series featuring the highly sought-after Family Concert, and the Pops Series, where audiences can enjoy Broadway and Movie Soundtracks. Stephen Tong is dedicated to educating the Indonesian public about the beauty of classical music. Each curated concert oers a unique opportunity to entertain audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Since 2019, JSO and JOS under the management of ASJ, have hosted Konser Akbar Monas, In- donesia’s first and largest classical music concert, held at the National Monument (Monas).
The orchestra has also given the Indonesian premiere of many important works, including Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, Mahler's Symphony No. 1 and No. 4, Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances, Rachmanino’s Symphony No. 2, and most recently, Gabriela Ortiz’ Antropolis and Eunike Tanzil’s Origin. In 2020, JSO established its contemporary group, Ensemble Kontemporer, to promote the appreciation of contemporary music and works by living com- posers.
The hall's location on the 24th floor not only oers stunning panoramic views of the city but also creates a serene environment that enhances the concert experience. Attendees can enjoy the beauty of Jakarta's skyline while immersing themselves in the rich sounds of chamber music, making each performance a memorable occasion.
In addition to regular performances, JSO, alongside JOS, has embarked on Grand Concert Tours, traveling to cities in Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Australia under the baton of Stephen Tong, showcasing the musicality and professionalism of Indonesian musicians.
